 Carbon farming can't meet needs

Carbon farming can't meet needs

17 Feb, 2012 09:28 AM
THE largest carbon emitters could face bigger pollution bills than first thought, because a shortage of cheaper carbon farming credits is expected to push the cost of credits higher as demand grows.

Carbon farming credits are more attractive than government-issued units because they will trade at floating rather than fixed prices, meaning emitters expect to get them cheaper than government units, The Australian Financial Review reports.

But on present calculations the top 500 polluters in Australia must account for 350 million tonnes of carbon each year, of which 5 per cent (more than 17 million tonnes) can be offset using credits generated under the carbon farming initiative (CFI).

The chief of carbon management company Climate Friendly, Freddy Sharpe, said the shortfall had created a sellers' market that would benefit companies such as CO2 Australia and Carbon Conscious, which plant mallee trees on marginal land.

CO2 Australia figures show the number of landholders investigating reforestation opportunities jumped more than 680 per cent in the seven months since the farming initiative was introduced.

"My very best, most aggressive estimate is that carbon farming schemes will produce about 2 or 3 million tonnes [of offset credits] from those projects," Mr Sharpe said. "There is no way anyone can currently see that we are going to get within cooee of the 17 million tonnes per annum of supply needed to fill the 5 per cent quota."

For what, a one off $25 per tonne I'm supposed to leap at the opportunity to turn my farm into a fire trap and tie it up for 100 years worth of open ended compliance and auditing fees? Come on, you might think that farmers are stupid, but we're NOT that stupid.

As I see it, farmers own the land. Farmers have the right or not to sell carbon credits. Dealers come in the middle to make good money on trades. Farmers best to do nothing, zip,no trades, carbon tax will implode. Best if farmers do nothing and sell no credits.

So the other 333,000,000 tonnes (95%) will have to be paid by the 'dirty 500' 333m x 23 = $7.659 billion which will be passed onto all their customers.

Meanwhile the Govt will have a huge cunning kick to squander.

Thanks for nothing Juliar et al.

Next time you need help there is nothing I will do because that is what you have done for us.

Go read "Greenhouse Gas Hypothesis Violates Fundamentals of Physics" by Dr Heinz Theime and then maybe you'll see why this whole issue is a giant scam.

Of course there is a problem with the scheme, my Station has millions' of Native Trees and Vegetation that is regenerating.

However, I cannot tap into it, instead am supposed to plant some atypical (read - weed) such as Tasmanian Gum, well I have fought weeds for decades and my ancestors before that so until Native Vegetation is accepted, the scheme has flaws.

Farmers, for carbon tax to work, they need your land, so they the government, can sell the credits, from your land. Well, don't even think of it, I have been approached, all the rules, are against us the farmers, but to tie your land up for 100years,you would have to be joking.sit back, relax, it's a major con . ........we've seen it all before.

Don’t get fixated on forests - it is more than trees. Only the sequestration activities have the 100 year rule. There are opportunities for regeneration and enhancing existing forests.

You are right to be wary of some operators - there are scammers and tricksters out there. You can own and sell your own carbon - all I get from the previous comments is that you are misinformed. There are many opportunities, some may or may not suit - I suggest you get better information and make your own decisions instead of relying on misinformation.

Taxed for emitting plant fertiliser into the air that helps all plant life grow. How mad are they ?

Any landowner who is stupid enough to enter into any deal, with any climate spiv, before the next election is certifiably barking mad. Have you seen the bookies odds on Labor winning the next election? Have you had your head in a paper bag lately?

The Germans are bailing out of this climate scam in droves. And that means even the remaining solvent European countries will follow. And take the euroscum out of the equation and the whole scam is in zombie mode.

Labor will be lucky to get a sniff of regaining power for another 3 terms so forget carbon crap until 2022.
